Water and air temperature sensors are set to be installed mid June 2023. The information will be posted once the sensors are in place. If you are interested in helping with the downloads, data processing and uploading to the website, please reach out to [email protected].
RDKB set up water temperature monitoring on two rivers (1) Kettle River at Danville (upstream of Grand Forks) and the Atwood Bridge (downstream of Grand Forks) and (2) Boundary Creek at Greenwood.
Unfortunately – the upstream (Danville) sensor has gone missing. If anyone sees a unit similar to the photo below please return it to the RDKB (Grand Forks office: 2140 Central Avenue) or contact [email protected]. Thank you!
Water Temperature Monitoring Unit
Real Time Water Temperature can be found for threeWater Survey of Canada Sites: West Kettle at Westbridge, Kettle River near Westbridge and the Granby River. If you are looking for more information on how to access this data contact [email protected].
Kettle River (Atwood Bridge)
Kettle River
The Kettle River is reaching at high as 25 °C at times during our recent heat wave. As the air temperature drops, so does the water temperature.
Boundary Creek (Greenwood)
Boundary Creek
Boundary Creek reached just above 20 °C during our recent heat spell, similar to the Kettle River, we are seeing the water temperatures drop as the air temperature starts to drop.
Areas with shade trees (in front of Perley Elementary School) compared to a nearby area without (Grand Forks Secondary School – across from the Tennis Courts)
GFSS (left) and Perley Elementary (right)
During the heat of the day, the difference appears to be as high as 10 °C. It is suspected that the field irrigation may have dropped the daily temperatures periodically.
Thank you to School District 51 for supporting this work.
Ever wondered how air temperatures in town differs between areas shaded by trees versus those non-treed spots? What about water temperature – how does a riparian area impact water temperature on a small stream?
The RDKB has been setting up a few sensors to monitor air and water temperature in the Boundary Region. Collected data we will uploaded to this site.
Heat Index: The area’s Relative Humidity will affect how the air temperature feels. Which is why a high temperature of 32°C on the Coast feels much warmer than 32°C on a dry day here in Grand Forks.
Time and Place Modifiers of Personal UV Exposure (Diffey 2018)
As the RDKB acquires more temperature sensors we are looking to monitor more locations. Do you have a spot that you think should be monitored? Fisheries issues? Potential heat islands? Send your ideas to [email protected]. Please send a photo and description of the concern with your suggestions.
